We're often asked, "What's the difference between a crisis, an emergency and a disaster?" The information below demonstrates the difference between these three situations and what the best course of action might be in each situation.
Crisis
A crisis is an event that is expected to lead to a dangerous situation, whether it's an emergency or a disaster. It's also defined as a "time of intense difficulty, trouble or danger." A crisis can be personal, or confined to a small population, like a family, or a company dealing with a very serious problem.
An emergency is a situation that requires immediate attention, but is usually on a small scale. A personal injury or a few people becoming suddenly ill. An emergency can turn into a disaster if left unchecked.
A disaster is a major event that causes serious misfortune on a city-wide scale. It usually involves several different agencies to act as first responders, including organizations outside of LifeNet and MHA-NYC.
If you or someone else you know has been affected by a disaster and needs immediate assistance:
Being aware of your mental health and a clear understanding of what calms and relaxes you can help you be prepared for any situation, whether it's a crisis, emergency or disaster.
